Who coined the term ‘Cradle to Cradle’?

According to The Product-Life Institute (www.product-life.org), Walter Stahel first used the term “cradle to cradle” in a 1976 research report to the European Commission in Brussels ‘The Potential for Substituting Manpower for Energy’, which sketched the vision of a circular economy. The term was later popularized by William McDonough and Michael Braungart in their 2002 book “Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things.”

How does the Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM Program compare to others?

The Cradle to Cradle
CertifiedCM Program is a third-party multi-attribute certification program that
assesses a product for safety to human and environmental health, design for future life cycles, and responsible manufacturing processes. A certified product will be assessed in five categories: Material Health,Material Reutilization, Energy use, Water stewardship, and Social Responsibility.Other certification programs are single-attribute and only measure one trait, such as VOC or carbon emissions.

Cradle to Cradle
CertifiedCM is a third-party multi-level program that awards different levels o
f success along a continuum. The Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM Program wants to engage companies at varying levels of environmental achievement and work with them to continue to improve their products and processes. Other certification programs have one benchmark by which you pass or fail and offer no support or recognition for achieving beyond that benchmark. Furthermore, at each level of certification products must meet the same minimum requirements in all five categories. Since all products certified at the Silver level have met all the same criteria, it is easier for a consumer to compare the overall impact on the planet of two different products. Other point-based certification programs allow the manufacturer to choose which categories of points they want to earn, which makes it more difficult for consumers to know what products certified at the same level have actually achieved.f success along a continuum. The

The Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM Program has universal criteria that apply to all products and materials in all categories and industries. With one set of rules for all products a consumer can more easily compare the eco-effectiveness of different products. For example, if you are picking flooring for your home you know that the carpets and hardwood flooring had to meet the same criteria. Other certification programs have different rules for different product categories, which makes it more difficult to make an apples-to-apples comparison.

Who develops the Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM Program criteria?
MBDC developed the certification program in 2005 around the Cradle to Cradle® design framework. The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute was founded in 2010 to administer the program and is responsible for any future version upgrades.
Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM is a certification mark licensed by Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute.
